The first week of school has ended, and it was intense but well worthwhile. I am at the library now, after returning from one of Taipei's night markets for lunch. Normally, the baby grand piano plays recorded tunes on the main level, its hymns rising up the atrium of eight libray floors where students are studying. Today, however, there is a live violin and cello concerto at the bottom of the atrium. This is so pleasant, I wonder why no other library I have been in has ever done this? Thus I am inspired to share with you the past hour of my time here...
The night markets in taipei are out of this world. imagine a maze of alleys, tight as a shoe box. then place myriad neon signs, in chinese script, of course, along house walls from top to bottom. restaurants and stores line up one after the other in a sea of shops. one is at a loss as to which to choose to have a meal. each dining experience, more amazing that the prior, uncovers an explosion of flavours in your mouth. "this must be one of the best meals i have ever had," is a phrase i have used and heard said already several times since i arrived here last sunday.
For lunch today, i returned to the night market near the university, picking a random restaurant that seemed nice. i also picked a random item on the chinese menu, why not be adventurous? when ordering, the server asked if i wanted coffee or tea with my meal? he tells me it comes along with lunch. i choose tea. "re bu re?" he asks. i answer, iced, please.
Lunch is served, and it is very good, i must say. fried egg over rice with chinese broccoli and a root vegetable that is just delicious, accompanied by a plate of crisp chicken with cucumber slices... hmmm! all of sudden, a bowl is offered to me: must be tea, only i had asked for iced tea... oh well, am i going to say anyting, and in chinese at that?
So i drink it: quite delicious, don't know why they serve it with a spatula? anyway, so beautiful too: three pieces of lotus root in the broth, and two baby clams in their shells at the bottom. wow, this food is delicious, and this tea, unusual as it be, is really delightful! and what an artistic presentation at that, this must be one of the reasons i came here from so far...
Meal is finished, tea is sipped, ice cream that comes with the meal is served... then comes an iced tea! well, if this is the iced tea i had asked for, what was the other dish that i sipped out from a little bowl?! too embarassed to ask, i realise it must have been either a broth for the rice, or a sauce to dip the chicken -- to think that i had drunk it directly from the bowl :)
Not too embarassed anymore, this will no doubt happen again during my stay in Taiwan. This meal was yet another appreciation of this exotic and charming culture. Just as now, I leave you to quietly listen to the this delightful music played in the library that brings me back to the Old World of Europe as I explore and enjoy the culture of yet another old world. Until next time, and a big kiss to you all!
